The Key Laboratory of Geographic Information Science of the Ministry of Education at East China Normal University, established in 2003, is one of the earliest institutions in China to conduct research on geographic information theory and applications. Its predecessor was the "Open Laboratory of Urban and Environmental Archaeological Remote Sensing of the Ministry of Education" established in the 1980s. Facing the urgent national and local demand for modern geographic information science and technology, focusing on the cutting-edge trends in the international geographic information science field, and adhering to the development direction of "based in Shanghai, serving the whole country, and connecting with the international community", the laboratory conducts research on the technologies and methods of geographic information acquisition and analysis, simulation and regulation of urban physical geography and environmental processes, and observation, simulation, and response to global change, around the contemporary goal of addressing global change and building harmonious cities.
Supported by the 985, 211, Double First-Class, and Peak and Plateau programs, the laboratory has independently developed and introduced a batch of advanced large-scale instruments and equipment, such as high-dimensional real-scene data acquisition systems, high-performance computer clusters, polar-orbiting remote sensing satellite data receiving systems, ground-based solar radiation monitoring systems, atmospheric infrared radiometers, continuous operation reference station systems, and portable radar interferometers, providing a solid foundation for the laboratory's scientific research and talent cultivation.
